Surrogacy is a compassionate or paid legal arrangement in which a woman agrees to become pregnant, by a means of assisted reproductive technologies (ART), for the purpose of giving birth to the child of another person or couple(the intended parents). There are two types of surrogacy. The first is gestational, in which a woman becomes pregnant by means of an embryo transfer, and therefore does not have a genetic link to the child. The embryo is created by in-vitro fertilization, using eggs and sperm from the intended parents or donors on their behalf. This is the most contemporary means of adding to your family through surrogacy. The choice of a gestational carrier is extremely important, and we guide you through the recruitment, screening evaluation, and selection process. We work closely with professional in other fields, especially physicians (reproductive endocrinologists) and psychologists. Some clients who require the services of a gestational carrier are not in fact infertile, but have some other underlying medical condition like heart disease, diabetes, or paralysis that would prevent a healthy pregnancy.

A less frequently used method of surrogacy involves the artificial insemination of a woman who contracts to be a traditional surrogate. These are handled similarly to an adoption. Because the surrogate is also a genetic parent, there are additional legal and emotional ramifications, and there is more risk attached to this type of surrogacy. It is appropriate for some families, but it should be approached with a great deal of care. While this is usually considered to be a riskier form of surrogacy, every family is different, and we consult with each client to help you determine the most appropriate method for your family. There are many types of surrogacy arrangements, and surrogacy laws can become complex when contracts are not drafted properly prior to starting a surrogate pregnancy.
